FAQ
Who needs to file a Self Assessment tax return?
Self Assessment is commonly required for self-employed individuals, landlords, company directors and people with income from dividends, investments or overseas sources.
You may also need to complete a return if you have untaxed income or other circumstances that HMRC requires you to report. If you’re unsure whether you need to file, we’re always happy to help.
What is the Self Assessment filing deadline?
The online deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. If you are filing a paper return, the deadline falls earlier on 31 October. Miss either date and an automatic £100 penalty applies, with further charges building the longer it remains outstanding.
What expenses can I claim on my Self Assessment?
It depends on your circumstances. Self-employed individuals can claim a broad range of business costs. Landlords can offset expenses such as repairs, letting agent fees, and professional costs against their rental income. Getting this right is where a qualified accountant makes a real difference.
What happens if I have made a mistake on a previous return?
Corrections can be made directly with HMRC within 12 months of the filing deadline. For anything older, a voluntary disclosure is usually needed. We review your previous returns, identify what needs fixing and handle everything on your behalf.
Can you help if I have not filed for several years?
Yes. It is a situation we come across regularly and it is always best to address it sooner rather than later. We will get your outstanding returns in order, manage the submissions, and deal with HMRC directly to keep penalties to a minimum.
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and does it affect me?
Making Tax Digital is changing the way many self-employed individuals and landlords report their income to HMRC. Landlords and sole-traders will need to make quarterly digital updates to HMRC where their turnover meets the threshold (£50,000 for the 2026/27 tax year, £30,000 in 2027/28, and £20,000 in 2028/29). The changes are being phased in, so not everyone is affected at the same time. We will confirm whether it applies to you and get everything in place ahead of your deadline.
Do you offer online Self Assessment services?
Yes. We work with clients across the UK and can manage the entire process remotely. Documents can be shared securely online, meetings can be held by phone or video call, and we’ll guide you through everything from start to finish.
How much information do I need to provide?
That depends on your circumstances, but we’ll make the process as straightforward as possible. We’ll let you know exactly what information we need and guide you through anything that isn’t clear.
Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how simple the process becomes with the right support.
